White Accountability Work

We often liken white people engaging in anti-racism work to someone trying to complete complex algebra before learning addition and subtraction. As white people, we are all too often used to taking the lead - whether it be starting a new organization or being the face of an initiative. That is rarely our role in anti-racism work.

We offer customizable white accountability groups for white people that share fundamental knowledge about whiteness, white supremacy culture, and anti-racism work while simultaneously supporting learners in identifying action steps to divest from white supremacy culture within their family, worship, community, and workplace contexts. Using critical race theory, Black feminism, cultural humility, social identity development, values and mindfulness as lenses and tools through which to engage in this work, participants are asked to reflect on their socialization as white people, unpack their past and present racism, and learn how to challenge racism both individually (within themselves and others) and systemically.

Unrestricting Masculinity

Topics may include:

  • Intro to “Restrictive Masculinity” and the “Man Box”

  • Emotional Intelligence, Self-Care, and Resilience

  • Masculine Power and Privilege – The Hierarchy of Masculinities

  • Masculinity and our Interpersonal Relationships

  • Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Accountability

  • Bystander Intervention

We offer customizable masculinity workshops, intergroup dialogues, and retreats aimed at challenging individuals to critically reflect on, examine, and deconstruct their own relationship with masculinity and its impact on self and others. We recognize that learners of all gender identities are impacted by restrictive gender roles. Our learning spaces are for providers, educators, clinicians, and other participants of all gender identities. We also offer specific learning spaces for male and masculine identified participants.

What we know about masculinity is that it is often plagued by a constant state of anxiety. Pressure to “perform” masculinity is a familiar hallmark of what is often associated with being a man, male, and/or masculine; however we also know that our rigid societal expectations of what it means to be “masculine” also impacts our relationships, coping strategies, self-concept and self-confidence regardless of gender identity and background.

Conflict and Accountability Skill Building

Conflict is not only a part of life, but an integral skill when engaging with anti-oppression and liberation work. We believe that engaging in generative feedback shows a commitment to the relationship, person and/or organization with whom you are in conflict. Unfortunately, for most of us, conflict has been modeled as an either/or - avoid or explode. Through this workshop, we re-focus on the expansive options available to us when engaging with conflict that fall between this false binary.

What to Expect

During this workshop, participants are asked to reflect on their experiences of conflict in their families of origin. How were conflict and accountability modeled to you growing up? What did conflict look like throughout your childhood and young adult life? What did resolution look like? How does that inform your approach to conflict and resolution now? These, and questions around our social identities, will be explored. Participants are then introduced to new skills around engaging in conflict. The workshop concludes with an opportunity to apply and practice what has been learned.
